A charming village in the beautiful Hunter Region.




Located in the idyllic lower Hunter Valley, Lochinvar is a village in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, 11 kilometres west of the regional centre of Maitland. Lochinvar has a recorded population of 784 residents.
The town is mostly built up along the New England Highway between the major centres of Maitland (12 minute drive) and Cessnock (19 minute drive) and is 165 kilometres north of Sydney and 51 kilometres to Newcastle.
The New Lower Hunter Hospital at Metford with a budget of more than $400 million is just one of the massive infrastructure projects currently underway in the Hunter Region. Maitland Hospital is also being upgraded as is the Ambulance Station.
There are a multitude of Medical Centres and Specialist services at West Maitland Medical Practice aswell as Maitland Hospital which is being upgraded as is the Ambulance Station.
Hunter Valley Buses runs two bus routes through the village of Lochinvar and the Lochinvar railway station is located just south of the village.
Lochinvar is home to the historic St Christopher’s Home for Little Children which was established by the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle in 1928. It can be found opposite the Lochinvar train station.
Located just outside Lochinvar is the historic home and property called “Windermere” built in 1821 with convict labour. It is the oldest house in the Hunter Valley.
There is also a locally famous country department store called “Aird’s of Lochinvar” which carries iconic brands like R.M.Williams, Akubra and Driza-Bone with many others.
Not to far from Lochinvar and just north-east of Greta is the Wyndham Estate Winery, open daily from 10.00 a.m. – 4.30 p.m. Enjoy a day with picnic-barbecue areas by the riverside, a restaurant, wine and food tastings, cellar-door sales and a museum.
There is plenty to explore on the weekends with acclaimed wineries and fine dining restaurants of the Hunter Valley an enjoyable 25 minute drive away. Just some of these include:

Schools in Lochinvar include the Catholic convent housing the Sisters of St Joseph (1883). Located here is St Joseph’s College – a coeducational college which caters for students from Years 7-12.
